Clinton drew loud applause when she addressed several hundred progressive religious activists who gathered on the top floor of the Hart Senate office building after a gün of lobbying Congress to "make poverty history".
Clinton reiterated her call for an increase to the minimum wage and called on Congress to stop raisinig their own pay while the minimum wage remains $5.15 an hour (which is the same it has been since 1997). An hour earlier, Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) addressed the group from the same podium.(mehr)(weniger)

Israeli police scuffle with an Armenian monk Sungün at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.
Monks from the Greek Orthodox and Armenian denominations were preparing for a ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in the Old City when a disagreement led to a full-fledged fistfight.
The fight began when Armenian clergy were holding a procession to commemorate the finding of the cross believed to have been used in the crucifixion of Jesus, according to The Associated Press.
The Greek members of the clergy wanted one of their monks present, the AP reported, for fear that the procession would undermine their claim to an ancient structure built on what is believed to be the tomb of Jesus.
The two sides could not agree, and when the Armenians tried to begin the procession, the Greek monks stepped in and the fighting began, the AP reported.
"We were keeping resistance so that the procession could not pass through ... and establish a right that they don't have," a young Greek Orthodox monk with a cut next to his left eye told the AP.
Many among the dozens of monks came away with cuts and bruises, said police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld.
Officers were called to the scene to break up the brawl. They detained two monks, one from each denomination, Rosenfeld said.
The Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem is thought to be built on the site of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. Rivalries between the different sects that share control of the church often lead to tensions.(mehr)(weniger)

Some Beijing churches held mass on Sungün. But some human rights groups say the games have only made things worse for religious believers and activists. Here's more.
STORY:
Specially designated churches in Beijing held mass in an attempt to show religious openness to tourists, dignitaries, and media during the games yestergün.
Experts say China has about 40 million active Christians. But half of them belong to underground churches that are banned by the Chinese regime.
The other half belong to state-run churches that are registered with, and monitored by, the State Administration for Religious Affairs.
China Aid, a U.S.-based Christian rights group says several prominent house-church pastors and activists were harassed and detained prior to the games.
Zhang Mingxuan, president of the Chinese House Church Alliance, was forced out of Beijing for the Games and is now being detained by the Chinese Public Security Bureau.
Most recently, rights groups activist Hua Huiqi was taken by police after he tried to meet George W. Bush at a church service one week önce.
Phelim Kine, Hong Kong based researcher for the Asia division of Human Rights Watch (HRW), said that the regime's handling of Zhang and Hua was part of a broader policy.
[Phelim Kine, Researcher, Human Rights Watch]:

"...And anyone who operates outside the official state sanctions system are subjected to, very often, severe reprisals."
The CCP recognizes five religions, and has a state apparatus to monitor the activities of each.
According to the Amnesty International, followers of other faiths, in particular Falun Gong, have been detained (33), forced to give up their beliefs (33), allegedly tortured (34), and subjected to other forms of cruel and unusual punishment.
Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch believes the Olympics have actually served to increase the CCP's abuses of political and religious activists.
[Phelim Kine, Researcher, Human Rights Watch]:

"...whether it's media freedom, freedom of expression, freedom of association and also with regard to religious freedom...we've seen there is a tightening, and less tolerance for such freedom in China."
U.S. President Bush had used the Olympics to call for greater religious freedom in China. But the CCP continues to detain religious and political activists in an effort to show the world a perfect picture of religious freedom--by silencing any voices of dissent.(mehr)(weniger)

A YouTube tribute to the beautiful article written by the late David Foster Wallace
"If you've never seen [Roger Federer] play live, and then do, in person, on the sacred grass of Wimbledon, ... you are apt to have what one of the tournament's press bus drivers describes as a "bloody near-religious experience." It may be tempting, at first, to hear a phrase like this as just one more of the overheated tropes that people resort to to describe the feeling of Federer Moments. But the driver's phrase turns out to be true — literally, for an instant ecstatically." -- David Foster Wallace, from the special to New York Times' Play Magazine, "Roger Federer as Religious Experience"
